On a day that the weatherman predicted an 80% chance of rain throughout the day, no one expected to get a full 45 over game in. A washout was on the cards when DC woke up to dark clouds on Sunday morning and weather.com reported "heavy rain" in Oxon Hill. However, to everyone's pleasant surprize, Oxon Hill was dry and pitch in perfect condition for an on-time start despite overnight and early morning rain.
A few late arrivals, missing whites and a lost toss later, Mavericks were batting first. DCU's opening bowlers started well bowling a tight line and length and runs were slow to come by. Two wickets fell fairly quickly and Mavericks' score read 23/2 at the first drinks break after 10 overs. The pattern continued in the second session as well with Mavericks losing wickets at regular intervals and the runs inching up every so slowly at 2 runs an over. Rajesh was the pick of the bowlers with four wickets in his quota of 9 overs for just 26 runs.
There were a few lusty blows hit in the middle overs but DCU's spin duo - Sameer and Beenish took quick wickets to put the brakes back on the scoring. Mavericks' 8th wicket 50+ partnership took the score to 140 but the innings closed soon after with the last two wickets being shared by Rishi and Neeraj.
The feared weather did arrive during the innings break and the heavens opened up for a heavy 20 min downpour. A throughly professional pitch covering and mop up job by DCU players (read: groundsmen) ensured that we would get a full game of cricket.
CP and Venkat opened the innings for DCU. The innings started disastrously with CP getting freakishly run out when a direct throw from fine leg broke the stumps. Sameer and Venkat started the repair job and got the DCU innings off the ground. Venkat got out after making 13 and Srini followed soon after. Srini's wicket brought Rajesh to the crease and both captain and vice captain teamed up to produce a match winning partnership for DCU. Sameer rotated the strike and was solid in defense while Rajesh stepped on the gas to ensure DCU was ahead on run rate at the 20 over mark in case the rain returned.
There was slight hiccup towards the end as three wickets fell quickly with a little over 30 runs still to get. DCU's batting depth ensured that there were no surprizes and knocked off the remaining runs with ease.
